Configuring a Windows VPN client

There are two sides to every VPN.  Once the Stratosphere EPN has had a VPN established, local clients need to be configured to be able to access.  There are many free and commercial clients available, and you most likely have one installed or available.  Since it would be impossible to know in advance what you might be using, here is an example of how to setup a Windows VPN client.

Note:  Depending upon what version you have, your screens may look a bit different than the included examples, but all of the steps are roughly the same.

Step 1: Go to "Control Panel" and open "Network and Sharing Center" (or its version dependent equivalent)

Step 2: Click on "Set up a new connection or network".

Step 3: Select "Connect to a workplace".

Step 4:  If this is the first time you have set up a VPN on your machine, you will be required to specify whether you want to use your Internet connection or dial directly.  For this example, we will "Use my Internet connection (VPN)".  Click "Next" to continue.

Client 3

Step 5: Enter the IP address of the Stratosphere VPN.  You should also give it a meaningful or memorable name for future reference.  If you want other people to use your connection, also click on "Allow other people to use this connection".

Note: Click on "Don't connect now; just set it up so I can connect later".  If you try to connect at this point, the connection will fail.  You still need to add your Preshared Key information once your connection has been created..  Click "Next" to continue.

Client 4

Step 6: Enter the user name and password you were assigned.  Be sure to click on "Remember password" unless you want to be prompted for it every time you launch your VPN client.  Press "Next" to continue.

Client 5

Step 7:  Once created, you will be prompted to either access the VPN host or "Close".  Click "Close".  This will return you to the "Network and Sharing Center" page.  Click on 'Change adapter settings" in the upper left hand corner.  A new screen will appear showing all of the connectors configured for your machine.  Select the one you just created.

Client 6

Step 8:  Click on "Properties".  Click on the "Security" tab.  Click on the "Advanced settings" button.  "Click on the "Use preshared key for authentication" radio button. Enter the preshared key that was generated for you when you created the VPN.  Click "OK" and "OK" again to complete the set up.

Client 7

Note: As mentioned above, depending upon which version of Windows you are using, the various popups and views could vary somewhat.  They all will have the necessary functionality, however.  FYI:  The above screen shots are from Windows Server 2008 R2.

Step 9:  Connect.  If everything has been set up correctly, you should be able to connect to your EPN environment.  Be patient.  The authentication, authorization and provisioning steps that occur in the background could take a few minutes.  On the far left of your "Network Connections" window, you should see a "Details" box showing the status of your connection.  You should see something like what is shown below.
